AUBREY

Out of all the millions of questions that are bouncing around in my head, echoing through my brain twenty-four hours a day, the one that is plaguing me the most came from the wise and blunt mouth of Cecelia Chen.

“Why exactly can’t you two be together?”

I puff out a sigh, reminding myself for the thousandth time of the litany of reasons Eli and I could never, ever work as a couple.

But the reasons are starting to get less significant. I thought he was this really laidback, go-with-the-flow guy who couldn’t commit to anyone and kept serious distance from attachment.

But…I gotta say. Last week, when we found the land plot for his new business, he certainly seemed borderline attached. And ever since then, it’s been so obvious. We’re more than friends. We can hardly deny it anymore. The ‘almost kissing’ is getting out of hand, but the dancing around each other is kind of…fun.

Or maybe it’s just the schoolgirl fantasies coming back to me full force, making me revert to the shy little bookworm who couldn’t even form sentences around her brother’s smoking hot best friend.

Is that all it is? Or could there be something more between us? Something…real?

I flop down on my bed, freshly out of the shower after a long and exhausting day at work. My bodyguard has left the apartment briefly to go pick us up some takeout, since I haven’t eaten all day, being so swamped with work and this new MLB stadium account.

Eli practically begged me to go with him since I, theoretically, am not supposed to be alone. But it’s still pretty light out, even though it’s almost eight, and there hasn’t been a red Honda sighting in over a week. The creepy calls have started coming less and less, too.

Once Eli gets Hounds for Heroes going and I start feeling totally safe again, I won’t need him anymore. We won’t need each other anymore. And that will be that. I guess.

The thought makes me really, really sad, even though I know that it shouldn’t.

Suddenly, my phone vibrates on the nightstand, and I sit up, my hair still wrapped up in a towel and my fuzzy robe tied snugly around my waist.

Incoming Call: Jake Shepard.

An unexpected flitter of nerves hits me at the sight of my brother calling.

Does he know? About the kiss? About the possible…feelings? Is it completely one-sided?

I let out a noisy sigh, rolling my eyes at my own anxious, overthinking mind and lift the phone to my ear, answering the call.

“Hello, brother of mine.”

“I miss you, kiddo. How have you been?”

I bite my lip, feeling a smile pull at my cheeks as my face flushes a little.

Play it cool, Aubrey. There’s nothing going on.

“Good, good. I don’t know if he’s told you yet, but Eli and I actually found a spot for his new business. A big plot of land, a little north of the city. It’s absolutely perfect, Jake. He’s so excited.”

“He texted me about it briefly, but I’ve been so busy I haven’t had the chance to get the full rundown.
